Toenails Q & A

What problems can occur in the toenails?

Toenails may be a small part of your feet, but they may create some serious problems. The most common toenail issues may include:

Nail fungus

Fungal infections can cause a number of nail issues, including crumbling, discolored toenails, and thick toenails. Nail fungus can also spread to other nails, and it may actually start in the skin. When it occurs in the skin (usually between the toes), this is called athlete’s foot. Common athlete’s foot symptoms include dry, flaking, and cracked skin.

Ingrown toenails

Ingrown toenails are nails that grow beneath the skin around the corners of the toe. An ingrown toenail can cause pain, redness, and swelling. It may also cause an infection that worsens symptoms further.

However, there are a number of other toenail issues, including an injury like stubbing your toe too hard. If you have a skin condition like psoriasis, you can also develop toenail problems.

When should I seek help for problems in my toenails?

If your toenails change significantly in any way, it’s time to reach out for help. Some issues that require attention include:

  • Toenail pain or pain in the nearby skin
  • Thick toenails that are hard to cut
  • Nail texture changes, like ridging or waviness
  • White, yellow, or brown toenails (discolored)
  • Skin changes around the toenails (dry, red, flaky, or cracked skin)

It is common to experience other issues alongside toenail problems. For example, corns, calluses, and warts are all foot problems that can cause a lot of discomfort, but as with toenail problems, they’re all treatable.

How are problems in the toenails treated?

Paris Foot & Ankle Clinic offers comprehensive solutions for toenail problems of all types. In many cases, conservative treatments such as topical medication, oral medication, and nail debridement (removal of diseased parts of the nail) may effectively resolve your toenail issue.

However, in some cases, like a recurrent ingrown toenail, you might need a minimally invasive surgery to remove the embedded nail and treat the nail root to prevent it from growing back.
